It’s where speakeasies tucked behind unmarked doors could just have easily gone unnoticed without a tip-off from the locals, and photos of Outlaw Country legends line the walls of many bars. This isn't your standard, tightly time-bound district. 72 Hours in Vibrant East Nashville: A Music Lover’s Dream

Day 1: Get Familiar

Arrive at Noa Nashville, relax, and dial into the ultimate luxury that’s yours for the next three days. While there are dozens of reasons why you’d want to eschew a brand-name hotel in favor of Noa’s exquisite resort, one of the best reasons is freedom.

With two full floors, a balcony overlooking the pool, and a massive property replete with amenities just beyond your door, you can begin your stay with a glass of wine or a relaxing cup of tea while gazing over the pool, courtyard, and surrounding neighborhood. If you’ve asked our staff to load up the fridge and cupboard with your favorite foods, snacks, and refreshments pre-check-in, you can throw together a little nosh that isn’t limited by a pricey hotel menu. At Noa, you can play it all by ear.

For your first night, we’ve got some great things planned, and it begins with…

A Pre-Show Dinner at GReKo, 704 Main St. ($)

For a fast and casual bite, GReKo Greek Street Food brings the bold flavors and lively spirit of Greece to Nashville, pairing traditional techniques with a modern, Southern sense of hospitality. This family-owned spot is known for its live-fire cooking and delicious creations. Take a table in the dining area, grab a seat at the bar, or enjoy a relaxing meal on the covered patio.

Start with some hummus (revithosalata) and fresh-grilled pita along with a glass of Skouras Zoe, Nemea. For dinner, we recommend the swordfish or the traditional souvlaki. Take in the color, the music, and the energy, and prepare for a spot-on show at The 5 Spot, your live music destination.

Opa!

Evening: The 5 Spot (~9:00 PM) ($)

Located at 1006 Forrest Ave., The 5 Spot is about a 7-minute walk from Noa. Featured on the ABC series “Nashville,” The 5 Spot is where other musicians go when they're not performing. On any given night, someone at the next table could be a prominent music celebrity or a superstar in the making.

This East Nashville dive bar books live acts across rock, soul, funk, and R&B seven nights a week. Monday nights are a neighborhood favorite, while the weekly dance party draws a mix of locals and in-the-know visitors. The 5 Spot promises a frenzy of high-energy talent and Southern hospitality, all in one.

Early shows happen from 6:00-8:30 PM, and the late show happens from 9:00 PM to midnight. If your schedule allows, don’t miss the drink specials before 9:45 PM on Mondays.

Insider tip: If you’re driving, parking is available on Forrest Ave and surrounding streets, but they get snapped up pretty quickly. If the weather is nice and you’re happy to keep on keepin’ on on foot, that’s our recommendation.

Day 2: Insights and Discoveries

Morning: Breakfast at Snooze ($)

About five minutes from Noa (969 Main St.) is the popular and vibrant Snooze, an A.M. Eatery known for its creative twists on breakfast classics, such as pineapple upside-down pancakes, a gorgeous array of Eggs Benedict options, and healthy omelette options. The ambiance is hipster and fun, and it’s the perfect way to start your music-filled East Nashville adventure.

Music City 101

Before we embark on our journey, we’ve put together a brief primer.

Nashville’s “Music City” moniker dates back to its earliest days, when settlers along the Cumberland River marked their arrival with fiddle tunes and dancing, weaving music into the fabric of everyday life. By the 1800s, the city had grown into a center for music publishing, but it was the international success of the Fisk Jubilee Singers in 1871 that truly put Nashville on the global stage. Their performances, most notably for the Queen of England, not only helped fund Fisk University’s mission to educate formerly enslaved people but also introduced the world to a powerful cultural hub.

As the 20th century unfolded, Nashville’s sound continued to evolve and diversify. During the Depression era, Jefferson Street emerged as a cultural hotspot, where clubs and speakeasies showcased rhythm and blues, jazz, and big band performances. Legendary artists like Jimi Hendrix and Etta James passed through these venues, helping cement the city’s influence beyond country music. Alongside the rise of iconic venues like the Ryman Auditorium, Nashville became a crossroads of genres that continues to shape a rich, layered music culture that defines the city today.

With this in mind, it’s off to the…

Country Music Hall of Fame + Music City Walk of Fame ($$)

A ten-minute drive from Noa on 222 Rep. John Lewis Way S, (Downtown), is one of the most significant music museums in the world.

For country music lovers (and music lovers more broadly), a pilgrimage to the Country Music Hall of Fame is practically mandatory. Three floors of meticulously curated history, artifacts, and storytelling trace the arc of an American art form from its rural Appalachian origins to its global dominance today. Plan 304 hours to do it properly. The temporary exhibits alone are worth the trip. Directly outside on the Music City Walk of Fame, brass medallions honor everyone from Elvis to Dolly to Jimi Hendrix; it is an unassuming yet genuinely moving outdoor gallery.

Pro tip: This venue does not have on-site parking, but there are lots of surrounding garages and lots, including the Walk of Fame Park Garage, which is beside both attractions and offers validated rates for museum visitors.

Pre-Show Dinner: Frankies 925 Spuntino ($$)

Frankies is also a ten-minute drive from Noa, located at 925 Cherokee Ave. A Nashville extension of the celebrated Brooklyn institution that has been feeding New Yorkers for decades, Frankies brings a slice of this celebrated Italian dining scene to East Nashville, offering a refined yet approachable take on classic fare. Known for its house-made breads, quality olive oil, and thoughtfully curated wine selection, you can immerse yourself in a polished atmosphere that’s both stylish and relaxed.

The menu leans into seasonal ingredients and traditional techniques, with standout pastas like pillowy gnocchi, truffle-topped linguine, and inventive ravioli. Frankies strikes a balance between elevated dining and easygoing charm, making it an ideal spot for a pre-show dinner.

A recent customer says, “I visited on August 1st to celebrate my birthday, and I’m still thinking about my meal. My cocktail, 'The Wind Rises,' was bold and full of citrus. I loved the Bergamot, altogether the cocktail had a very unique taste that almost reminded me of tea. ‘The Zephyr Squash' was an excellent antipasto served cold on a hot day, and my main entrée, the ‘Spicy Crab Sopresine’, carried a subtle heat. The noodles were done easily, and the sauce was thick. I celebrated the peach season with the peach panna cotta. It was a great treat. Trecie did an excellent job, and I had a great birthday. Thank you. 5 stars.”

Evening Show: Skinny Dennis ($)

About a 15-minute walk from Frankies is Skinny Dennis, an outpost of the legendary Brooklyn honky-tonk and a Yelp top pick for live music in East Nashville.

Named in tribute to the late Outlaw Country bass player Skinny Dennis Sanchez, this is the bar you come to for genuine country twang. This East Nashville music honky-tonk hang books top-shelf country and Americana artists seven nights a week, with a prominently displayed sign that reads "absolutely, positively no line dancing." The bartenders are exceptional, and the frozen coffee is cult-famous. Revel in the Outlaw Country music spirit that imbues over every corner and settle into the real thing.

Insider tip: Skinny Dennis strongly recommends ride-sharing given the Gallatin Pike location. Wise advice if a pint or two of their draft beer is on order.

Day 3: It’s Such a Perfect Day…

Start at Turkey and the Wolf Icehouse ($$)

An 8-minute drive from Noa is a relatively new arrival and already buzzworthy James Beard Award semi-finalist, Turkey and the Wolf Icehouse. Sound intriguing? An extension of the New Orleans original, this neighborhood gem was also named the best new restaurant in the South by multiple publications and scores 9/10 at The Infatuation.

Cool and laid back, the New Orleans sandwich institution is exactly the kind of discovery that hits every note. The menu is kitschy, fun, and completely uncompromising in its commitment to flavor. Example: the fried bologna sandwich with house-made mustard (don’t be afraid of it). For breakfast, there’s the Grand Slam McMuffin, the Dream Yogurt Granola Situation, and the Spanky Supreme. Plan on a lazy, leisurely morning over a totally unexpected breakfast before your final full day in this glorious neighborhood.

Afternoon Field Trip: The Listening Room Café (show tickets and food prices vary)

Despite Nashville’s thriving music scene, The Listening Room at 618 4th Ave. S features inspired acoustic acts that are hard to find, especially so close to downtown. This no-frills venue is where talented singer-songwriters perform their own work, and where you can learn about the stories behind the songs.

With its spacious stage and welcoming atmosphere, it’s become a must-experience destination for those looking to experience Nashville beyond the typical Broadway scene.

Pre-Show Dinner at the Twelve Thirty Club Rooftop Bar ($$)

A 12-minute drive from Noa is The Twelve Thirty Club, a standout addition to the downtown scene founded by renowned restaurateur Sam Fox alongside Justin Timberlake and a group of investors. Just off Broadway, this sprawling, three-level venue was specifically designed to make an impression, and it more than delivers. We suggest the rooftop bar (which also doubles as a restaurant) for a pre-show dinner, or the supper club or honky tonk for dinner and a show.

The crowd reflects the venue’s upscale edge, which means an easy mix of locals, visitors, and well-dressed groups looking for a more elevated alternative to Broadway’s typical party scene. With a strong cocktail roster, world-class brands of whiskey, and a wine list curated with expert precision, The Twelve Thirty Club serves up a layered, high-end take on Nashville nightlife that’s equally rooted in the city’s spirit.

Saving the Best for Last This Evening: The Bluebird Café ($)

Located at 4104 Hillsboro Pike, you’ll need to drive, cab, or rideshare to this one, but it’s a can’t-miss.

The Bluebird Cafe is one of Nashville’s most iconic music venues, a place where legends are made and their stories take center stage. Artists like Kris Kristofferson, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, Lady A, and Garth Brooks all played here early in their careers, and the venue continues to be a cornerstone of Nashville’s songwriting culture. Intimate and unpretentious, it’s where the genius of celebrity performers’ singing and songwriting is showcased. Proceeds go directly to the performers through the nonprofit model.

With just 90 seats, every spot is nice and close to the stage. This is the kind of place where rising talent and established names can share the spotlight, and where surprise drop-ins aren’t uncommon. Tickets are notoriously hard to secure, going on sale at 10am and often selling out within minutes. Go to their website to make your selections, and if you don’t win this lottery, you can take your chances on a table being available, or you can choose another venue.

Alternative Evening Show Option: The Basement East

The Basement East (ticket prices vary)

A seven-minute walk from Noa Nashville, at 917 Woodland Street, is The Basement East, affectionately known as “The Beast.” This is one of East Nashville’s go-to venues for live music with more of an edge. A larger offshoot of the original Basement (located beneath the iconic Grimey’s record store), this space brings a high-energy, salt-of-the-earth atmosphere with room for a lively crowd while still feeling connected to the city’s indie roots.

The lineup is as diverse as Nashville itself, spanning country, rock, and underground acts, along with creative tribute nights and occasional surprise performances by well-known artists. It’s a standing-room-only venue, so arriving early is key if you want a spot near the stage. With its raw vibe, strong sound, and reputation for memorable shows, The Beast promises an authentic, slightly gritty alternative to the more polished downtown options.
